ELV – End of Life Vehicles (automobile) scrap
![]() ![]() |
Automobiles are the most recycled consumer product in the steel industry, with approximately 9 million tonnes of ELV scrap produced each year in Europe (EU25). However an increasing number of vehicle components are being built from non-ferrous metals, leading to ever higher levels of contaminants entering the steel fraction. The most troublesome of these is copper. Typically, ELV scrap contains copper levels of between 0.5 and 1%. Even with additional hand-sorting measures, meeting the stipulated less than 0.25% of copper in ferrous scrap is becoming an impossible task. The ReSteel Solution reduces the copper levels in ELV scrap by at least 90%. The result is a ferrous fraction of almost pure iron, and comprising 75-85% of the total scrap volume.
