Excessive copper contamination in the melt causes new steel to become either too soft or too brittle, making it unsuitable for further use. According to steel producers, this escalating problem is undermining their confidence in the use of scrap as a raw material.

The CSM (Clean Scrap Machine) is an installation designed to extract ferrous parts from metal scrap. By identifying and separating the 'clean' scrap from the non-ferrous elements, the CSM ensures that all materials other than iron, including copper-rich parts such as motor armatures and transformers, are removed.
The result is a clean scrap fraction that is 75 – 85% of the total volume, and consists of almost pure iron, with a copper content frequently less than 0.1%.
With the remaining fraction only 15-25% of the total volume, processing the contaminants, including copper, becomes both faster and easier. And because the whole process is mechanical, the ratio and quality are consistently reproduced.
